This module is based and organized within the framework of one of the ongoing research projects within the research group Global Challenges. This might be either one of PhD-projects or one of the research-projects by current members of the artistic staff.

Presentations and discussions form the discursive part, on the basis of which each student investigates issues and content related to urgent global challenges. Students develop working methods, leading up to individual and/or group presentations of the resulting artwork(s).

Utfyllande semesteromtale

Global Challenges is a research-based workshop-module with

Johan Sandborg, professor in Photography

Duncan Higgins, 20% professor in contemporary art

Images are at the heart of how we have and are continually constructing our ethical positions and conduct today. It has been well documented that one of the conditions that defines our culture is our ability to produce, reproduce and consume images of others and ourselves.

In relation to this, questions of ethics and conducts become increasingly relevant when confronted with the tension between literalness and metaphor that are at work in documentary images. At the same time, to call any image depiction of events and moments documentary is a misnomer of catastrophic proportions. Can images for example of unimaginable horror or violence be considered as documents? or is the distance between the experience and the subjective to wide for the documentary image to transcend?

One particular question is how to (re) integrate images through art into historically active conversations about Europe¿s ¿ our ¿ history of violence. A history, it is necessary to recognise ¿ which we are living in today.
