Mål og innhald
This course will give a brief outline of the main aspects of Norwegian culture and history from the Viking age until today. In the course we also discuss the relationship between historical experiences and the present by exploring contemporary cultural conceptions and representations of "Norwegianness".
Methodology and historiography are integrated parts of the course. It is designed for non-Norwegian students and can not be used as a component in a Norwegian University degree.
The aim of this course is to give students insight into Norwegian culture and history from the Viking age until today.

Knowledge
The student will achieve basic insight in Norwegian history and culture.
Qualifications
The student will have qualifications to discuss historical phenomena and cultural issues and draw own conclusions based on his/her analysis.
Competence
The student is able to present historical knowledge and cultural views and argue for own conclusions in written form.

The student must be able to document at least one passed university examination in order to obtain admission to this course.

The course is open for students at the University of Bergen.
Arbeids- og undervisningsformer
The teaching is given in English. Normally 2 hrs a week, for a duration of 10 weeks.
Obligatorisk undervisningsaktivitet
Students are required to submit a paper of 1500 words. After the submission, the students will receive a brief comment on their paper.
Vurderingsformer
7 days take home exam, a paper of approx.1500 words
The exam may be written in English or in Norwegian.

Karakterskala
Grades will be set using a scale of A to F.
Vurderingssemester
Autumn. Examination will also be held in the course-free term (spring) for students having passed the compulsory requirement.
Litteraturliste
The required reading list consists of approx. 1200 pages. All litterature is in English.
