Professor Per Lægreid and Professor Emeritus Harald Sætren have, together with co-authors Professor Tom Christensen (Department of Political Science, University of Oslo) and Associate Professor Peter L. Hupe (Erasmus Graduate School of Social Sciences and the Humanities), written chapters in the book “The Palgrave Handbook of Public Administration and Management in Europe” – edited by Edoardo Ongaro og Sandra Van Thiel.

Lægreid and Christensen’s chapter, “An Organization Approach to Public Administration”, deals with the need to combine organization theory with research of public administration based on bounded rationality. They highlight that environmental, cultural, institutional and structural factors are important in the Scandinavian research tradition, and that this mixture of political science and organization theory with an empirical orientation has been fruitful.

In Sætren and Hupe’s chapter, “Policy Implementation in an Age of Governance”, they focus on the historical development of the study policy implementation from the 1970s to the early 2010s. They highlight a third generation research paradigm, where research design and methodology are more rigorous. Further, they find that the theoretical bases for implementation of policy has a more parsimonious theoretical founding, and the focus has turned from North America towards Europe.

The book is coming out on the 27th of December 2017 in a hard cover format, and is now available as an e-book.
