Role of Gas6 - Axl axis in malignant interaction with the host

The interaction between malignant cells and the host plays a crucial role in cancer progression and therapy resistance. The bone marrow represents an important place in which leukemia cells as well as early disseminated tumor cells (DTCs) interact with different populations of stroma cells. Vice versa, bone marrow-derived cells are recruited into tumors where they foster cancer cell proliferation, angiogenesis and metastasis. At the molecular level, Growth arrest-specific gene 6 (Gas6) and its TAM receptors represent important mediators of this cross-talk between bone marrow cells and cancer cells.
