Emotion, cognition and behavior

Ray Dolan
Wellcome Department of Imaging Neuroscience, Institute of Neurology and Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, London, UK

Emotion is central to the quality and range of everyday human experience. The neurobiological substrates of human emotion are now attracting increasing interest within the neurosciences motivated, to a considerable extent, by advances in functional neuroimaging techniques.
An emerging theme is the question of how emotion interacts with and influences other domains of cognition, in particular attention, memory, and reasoning. The psychological consequences and mechanisms underlying the emotional modulation provide the focus of this presentation.

The research of Dr. Ray Dolan focuses on areas relating to emotion and cognition. In particular, he and his group are concerned with how the human brain processes emotional information and with the effects of this processing on autonomic function, attention and memory. The investigative methodologies include functional neuroimaging, psychophysiological measures and studies of patients with discrete brain lesions.
