Film screening of Mediterranea followed by a webinar discussion with Sine Plambech (Danish Institute for International Studies), Kari Anne Klovholt Drangsland (UiB) and Nando Sigona (University of Birmingham) hosted by Synnøve Bendixsen (Leader of the Migration Pillar, UiB). 

Welcome to the second Global School Film & Reflections, providing food for thought, body and soul. The series addresses the global challenges that are at the heart of the Bergen School of Global Studies: Inequality, Climate, Health, Migration and Governance.

We will screen the movie "Mediterranea" followed by a webinar with Sine Plambech, Kari Anne Klovholt Drangsland and Nando Sigona hosted by Synnøve Bendixsen. Bendixen is the leader of the Migration pillar for the Bergen School of Global Studies. 

The movie screening starts in Jusbygg II Auditorium at 16:00 and will be followed by a webinar starting at 18:15.  For those who wish to see the movie at home a link will be provided a few days in advance of the event.

Mediterranea (2015)  Two men make the dangerous journey from Africa to Italy for a better life, but then face hostility and violence in this shocking look at the life-and-death struggle of refugees.

Dr. Sine Plambech is an anthropologist, film director, and Senior Researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies. She is currently a Visiting Professor at Yale University. She specializes in the areas of migration, women’s migration, smuggling, trafficking, and the sex industry. She works and films in migrant communities, border areas, red-light districts, and along migrant routes from and in Nigeria, Thailand, Sicily, and Denmark. With the multi-award-winning films, Heartbound and Fra Thailand til Thy, Sine Plambech stepped firmly onto the international documentary film scene.

Nando Sigona is a social scientist with over fifteen years research and teaching experience in migration, refugee, citizenship and ethnic studies. He is the Director of the Institute for Research into Superdiversity (IRiS) and a Research Associate at the University of Oxford’s Refugee Studies Centre. Professor Sigona’s work investigates the migration and citizenship nexus. Nando is one of the founding editors of Migration Studies, an international academic journal published by Oxford University Press and the editor of the book series Global Migration and Social Change by Bristol University Press.

Dr. Kari Anne K. Drangsland is a human geographer and gender scholar at the University of Bergen. She is currently working on a project researching the turn towards temporary protection in European migration politics. She has over the past fifteen years worked with topics related to migration and urban planning at the cross-section of research, education, design and art. In 2007, she co-founded the Centre for Urban Ecology in Bergen.
