About the Center for Data Science

The Center for Data Science, CEDAS, was established in 2018 to facilitate, unify and coordinate research and education efforts in data science and artificial intelligence across the University of Bergen.

"CEDAS amounts to a wonderful opportunity for data scientists from multiple related areas to cooperate interdisciplinary in advancing both research and education of data science to the next level. CEDAS is our answer to the need for bringing complementary data science competence together, substantiate UiB's leadership in the topic, and to improve our educational offer in data science." - Helwig Hauser.

Data Science enables the extraction of useful information from large and complex data and has become crucial for many aspects of our society. The University of Bergen has several departments across its faculties that conduct research in Data Science. For the Department of Informatics, establishing a center for research and education in Data Science has been a priority, based on our rich experience in machine learning, artificial intelligence, algorithms, visual data science and data science in bioinformatics.

Therefore, even before forming CEDAS, we already established an own research group in machine learning. Our commitment in this direction was further strengthened with the ERC consolidator grant that was awarded to Saket Saurabh on algorithmic research related to data science and artificial intelligence. At the same time, the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Information and Media Sciences, as well as the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of medicine have strengthened their competence in data science and artificial intelligence over the years. The Center for Data Science, CEDAS, was established to coordinate and substantiate these efforts, and our main ambition is thus to be a leading research center in Data Science and related topics, both nationally and internationally.
