Flow Cytometry Core Facility


High speed bench top cell sorter with solid state diode lasers, advanced fluorescence detection with fiber optics and optimized beam path, and digital signal processing. Fixed-alignment cuvette flow cell for superior fluorescence sensitivity.


  • Four air-cooled lasers: 405 nm, 488 nm, 532 nm and 638 nm.
  • Multi colour analysis of max 17 parameters (15 fluorescence and 2 scatter) sort four different populations simultaneously or sort into 6, 24, 48, 96 and 384 well plates or onto glass slides.
  • Temperature control on samples and collected tubes ranges from 4° to 37°C.
  • PC-based FACS DiVa software.

The UiB Flow Cytometry core facility does not perform viable cell sorting on samples containing pathogens known to infect humans. Due to the fact that cell sorting generates aerosols and that cells are generally not submitted in any fixative, the biohazard risks are much greater than in analytical flow cytometry.

It is therefore important to discuss any and all biohazard issues with the sorter operator. The same considerations also apply to the use of the analytical samples.

Certified trained users may use the FACS Aria without Core Facility supervision. Qualification provides use of the facility outside normal operating hours which include evenings and weekends.
