Extension of PhD period due to Covid-19
As a general rule, UiB will give PhD students an additional one-month extension as a concequence of the corona situation.
In June 2020, the university leadership, in agreement with the faculties, decided that PhD studentswould, as a general rule, extend the research fellowship period by 1 month for unjustified obstacles of a work-related nature as a result of the pandemic, if the obstacles were significant for progression in their PhD work.
One year later, the PhD students are still in a vulnerable situation. The survey among the PhD students shows that large parts of this group have had delays in their work on the doctoral degree and the faculties have already granted extensions.
The need for further extension for PhD students has been debated in the sector in general, in the university board and has been addressed by union representatives in Forhandlingsutvalget.
As a general rule, UiB will give PhD students an additional one-month extension as a result of the corona situation. This means that PhD students who have already received a one-month extension as a result of covid-19 and are still employed receive an additional one-month extension.
- PhD students who were not employed when the previous assessment was made and are employed before 1.1.21 receive a one-month extension.
- PhD students who are employed after 1.1.21 will not receive an extension.
The scheme is handled by the individual faculty. Extensions to PhD students and postdocs who due to illness and care for children and close relatives will be given in line with normal practice and current laws and regulations.
Managers must show flexibility in the assessments, so that the research fellows get predictability in their work situation. Questions about extension are handled at faculty level.
