Course description

Objectives and Content

The course gives a critical and advanced introduction to a specified field of literary theory or the works of a literary theorist.

The course aims to provide the student with extended knowledge of this field or theorist, and to train students to have a critical and independent understanding of main questions that are connected with the study of literary theory in the field of comparative literature.

Recommended Previous Knowledge
It is recommended that students have completed the introductory semester as well as ALLV111, ALLV112, ALLV113, ALLV114 or equivalent.
Credit Reduction due to Course Overlap
None, but students who have taken or are taking ALLV201 must, in consultation with the course lecturer, ensure that the syllabus has different content in order to receive full credits (ECTS) for ALLV221.
Access to the Course
The course is open to all students admitted to the University of Bergen.
Teaching and learning methods

Seminars (normally 2-3 hours per week for maximum 12 weeks)

In the case that fewer than five students register for a course, the organized teaching may be adapted to fit the number of students.

Forms of Assessment
The exam is a four-hour school exam.
Grading Scale
Grade scale A-F.
Assessment Semester
Autumn. The exam is only offered during the teaching semester. For students with the right to a new assessment, it will be possible to take a new exam in the following semester.
Reading List
The reading list is comprised of a selection of five to six works. Among these, two works or selected texts from works ought to be literary texts and three to four works should be texts of literary theory. A selection of 100 pages literary theory, 25 pages of poetry or 150 pages of prose counts as one work.
Course Evaluation
Course evaluation will be conducted in accordance with the University of Bergen's quality assurance system.
Examination Support Material
Students are allowed to use a monolingual (English - English) dictionary during school examination.
