Molecular Biology Methods

Undergraduate course

Course description

Objectives and Content

The aim of the course is to develop knowledge about molecular biological methods used in diagnostics, characterization of pathogenic microorganisms and host responses in fish and other aquaculture species. This knowledge is developed through laboratory exercises, lectures, discussions and writing journals.

Topics provide a practical introduction to the most important methods. Students will learn to use reagents and equipment from their own experience and understand how enzyme reactions and molecular interactions can be used to examine blood and tissue samples from fish. Some methods will be presented as demonstrations/lectures.

Participation in the course is compulsory. The course lasts three weeks, and consists of a lecture on Mondays, full days of practice from Tuesday to Thursday, and a seminar on Fridays. Five reports in total must be submitted: one after the first week and two after the two following weeks. There is a deadline on Sundays and feedback is given on the following Thursdays.
