Objectives and Content
The course gives the students an introduction to and overview over various energy resources, and their applications.
The course shall convey understanding of how various energy resources contribute to the energy supply nationally and globally and how the energy is used.
Important renewable energy resources such as solar energy, wind energy, hydropower, tidal and wave energy, bioenergy and geothermal energy are to be discussed. Further, nuclear power and fossil energy resources together with CO2 capture and storage will be discussed. The various energy resources will be discussed in a sustainability and economic perspective. The concept of life cycle analysis will be introduced. The course will give an overview over national and global energy production and consumption as well as projections forward in time.
On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
- can explain the various energy resources and their relative importance in the global and national energy supply
- can explain key terms and concepts related to various energy technologies
- can explain the application of various energy resources and technologies
- can make estimates on available energy from various resources as well as efficiencies related to conversion of energy between various forms
- can make simple estimates of energy consumption and cost of energy
- can make simple calculations related to fundamental and key relations for the various energy technologies
- can discuss challenges related to the development of energy usage globally and locally, including resources, costs, societal, and environmental issues

Access to the Course
Access to the course requires admission to the Integrated Master's Programme in Energy.
Teaching and learning methods
2 lectures à 2 +1 hour each week, 1 exercise per week. The exercises will include practice in calculations and 1-2 project assignments with discussions of topics addressed in the lectures. Some of the lecturing time will be allocated to guidance in the project work.
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
Approved mandatory project assignments.
Valid for two semesters: The semester the compulsory assignments were approved and the following semester.
Forms of Assessment
Mandatory project assignments will count 20% of the final grade and must be approved.
Written exam 4 hours will count 80% of final grade and must be passed.
Examination Support Material
Simple calculator according to the regulations at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
Examination both spring semester and autumn semester. In semesters without teaching the examination will be arranged at the beginning of the semester
The reading list will be available within June 1st for the autumn semester and January 1st for the spring semester.
The course will be evaluated by the students in accordance with the quality assurance system at UiB and the department.
Normally, referents groups will be used each year.
The Programme Committee is responsible for the content, structure and quality of the study programme and courses.
For written exams, please note that the start time may change from 09:00 to 15:00 or vice versa until 14 days prior to the exam. Autumn 2020 written exams will be arranged either at home or on campus. Please see course information on MittUiB.
