Objectives and Content
The course contains a thorough description of the thermodynamics laws, as well as selected topics in pharmaceutical technology, macromolecules and colloidal chemistry. The course builds further on the thermodynamic and kinetic concepts introduced in FARM110. The course deals with chemical equilibrium, phase equilibriums, phase diagrams (transitions between gas, liquid and solid), properties of liquid mixtures and solutions of substances in liquids. Key concepts and phenomena will be studied in the laboratory section.
Learning Outcomes
After completing the course the student should be able to:
- Apply basic thermodynamic principles to the study of chemical / physical processes and equilibria as:
- Energy / work / heat relations
- Phase equilibria and phase transitions
- Colligative properties
- Understand the basic concepts in pharmaceutical technology (i.e. formulations), macromolecules and colloidal chemistry

Access to the Course
The course will be open to students at Master Programme in Pharmacy.
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
- In order to obtain approval of the mandatory activities, and therefore gain access to the final exam, one must submit mandatory assignments of a satisfactory standard within the set deadlines. Mandatory assignments should be your own work
- Serious violations of the HSE rules wil lead to a loss of the right to complete the laboratory course.
- it is not possible to use more then 3 attempts (semesters) to complete the laboratory course.
Forms of Assessment
Written exam (4h). 100 % final grade.
Due to the measures taken to avoid the spread of Covid-19, UiB is closed for on-campus assessment. As a consequence, the following changes is made to assessment autumn semester 2020:
- Written home examination instead of written examination

Non-programmable calculator (definite models decided by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences).
Grading Scale
The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale and grade F is a fail.

Ordinary exam each semester.
