Objectives and Content

The aim of this unit is to introduce students to clinical pharmacy and to develop basic clinical skills.

Learning Outcomes


The student is able to:

  • Differentiate between minor and major illnesses
  • Select the most appropriate course of action including selection of appropriate therapy
  • Describe and recommend appropriate pharmaceutical therapy for the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease


The student is able to:

  • Provide effective presentations
  • Effectively reflect on experiential learning to identify future learning needs

General Competence

The student is able to:

  • Demonstrate how to improve pharmaceutical care for patients
  • Demonstrate how to perform medicines reconciliation on admission to hospital
  • Respond appropriately to simple medicines information queries
  • Provide appropriate medicines related advice to patients in a suitable manner
  • Review therapy and prepare pharmaceutical care plans
  • Constructs effective approaches for improving adherence

Master`s Programme in Pharmacy

Teaching and learning methods

This unit will include:

Workshops, lectures, seminars, team based learning, student led presentations and hospital placements corresponding to 8 ECTS

  • 14 hours lectures
  • 12 hours workshops
  • 12 hours of team based learning
  • 8 hours of student led presentations
  • 4 hours of formative assessment
  • 25 hours placements
  • 35 hours self-directed learning

Teaching Methods and Extent of Organized Teaching

This unit will include:

Workshops, lectures and hospital placements corresponding to 8 ECTS

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

Mandatory attendance at all workshops and placements. Mandatory attendance for all lectures (maximum 20% absence from lectures allowed).

Forms of Assessment

Assessment will be in three parts, all of which must be passed to pass the course. The pass mark for all parts is 60%.

Part 1: Portfolio, which includes placement documentation, workshops and write ups, reflections on placements, and different clinical skills, reflective essay and a mini objective structured clinical examination. The portfolio must be handed in one week before the written exam.

Part 2:

1 hour: OSCE-exam

Part 3:

Written exam, 2 hours, which includes:

-1 hour, open book exam to include pharmaceutical care plan

-1 hour, 30 multiple choice questions based on scenarios (Closed book exam, no support materials allowed)

Part 2 and 3 will be completed on the same day. Including breaks it will take 4 hours. The folder will be handed in on the exam day

If you fail one of both parts of the exam, you must re-sit the part(s) you did not pass, including all the elements of that part(s).

Examination Support Material

Written exam: 1 hour open book

OSCE: Relevant materials will be provided for each station
