Course description

Objectives and Content

The course will deal with some of the basic concepts of modern thought through reading one or more central classical texts. The course will develop the students' abilities for analytical and historical-critical reading of classical original texts in modern philosophical thinking.

The course will be based on a problem studied on the basis of reading central original classical texts. The course will give the students the opportunity to specialize in relevant philosophical issues in modernity.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge:

After completing the course, the student should have:

- knowledge of one or more relevant issues that are discussed in the modern thinking.

- good knowledge of one or more original texts.

Skills:

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

- to gain knowledge about the concepts employed in modern thinking.

- use methods for analyzing the theoretical and conceptual core points of modern thinking.

- write an argumentative paper.

Competence:

After completing the course, the student should have competence:

- work independently and communicate on professional topics.

- to read modern philosophical classical texts at a high professional level.

Required Previous Knowledge
Bachelor's degree with 90 ECTS. Specialization in philosophy or equivalent.
Recommended Previous Knowledge
Good English skills are essential, since one must expect that a lot of the syllabus is in English.

Access to the Course
This course is open to students who have been admitted to the Master's programme in philosophy. All other students require permission in order to register for this course. Please contact studieveileder@fof.uib.no to apply.
Teaching and learning methods

The teaching takes the form of lectures and / or seminars.

If fewer than four students are registered, the number of lectures may be reduced. The students will be offered individual or small group teaching.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

An approval of compulsory requirements is valid for three semesters, including the semester in which the approval is given.

  • Students must submit a proposal and draft of their semester assignment. Deadlines are set by the department.
  • Students must attend a supervision session with the instructor.
Forms of Assessment

An essay of 4000- 6000 words (not including table of contents, list of references etc.) The topic of the essay must be approved in advance by the teacher of the course instructor. The essay will be assessed at the end of the semester.

Exams in the course are held every semester.

The compulsory activities have to be formally approved before one can take an exam in the course.

The compulsory requirements have to be formally approved in a semester in which there is teaching in the relevant course in order to register for the examination in a semester in which there is no teaching in that course.

Grading scale from A to F.
Assessment Semester

The exam is arranged quarterly.

The compulsory work requirements must be approved before the examination can be taken in the course.

The list of literature is made available on uib.no June 1st for the Fall semester, and December 1st for the Spring semester.
