Course description

Objectives and Content

The aim of the course is to give an in-depth account of a linguistic problem in e.g. French phonology, syntax, semantics, lexicology, textual linguistics or sociolinguistics.

Upon completing the course, the student is expected to:

Proficiency in 100 and 200 level French or the equivalent.
Credit Reduction due to Course Overlap
Due to certain academic overlaps, the credits awarded for taking FRAN307L">FRAN307L are reduced by 10 ECTS if the course is combined with FRAN307 and 15 ECTS if the course is combined with Linguistic seminar FRAN303/304.
Access to the Course
The course is open to all students admitted to the MA program in French at the University of Bergen.
Teaching and learning methods

Teaching is conducted in the form of lectures/seminars over approx. 12 weeks.

Teaching methods that facilitate student activity are used, for example, problem-based learning where students must find solutions together with one or more fellow students. If resources allow, seminars will be held in smaller groups - combined with teacher and / or fellow student feedback.

If less than 5 students sign up for the course, the teaching may be adjusted to the number of students enrolled. If so, students will be informed about the alternative teachings plan at the beginning of the semester and before the registration deadline 1 Feb/1 Sep.

There may also be some shared classes for students in the NORPART- masterĀ“s courses/program.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

The students must attain approval on an oral presentation (approx. 15 min.) on a relevant subject within the first seven weeks of seminars.

The written manuscript for the oral presentation is to be handed in immediately prior to or following the presentation.

Mandatory assignments are valid for one additional semester following the semester of instruction.

Forms of Assessment

The assessment is a term paper of around 4000 words (four-weeks).

Students will be offered supervision during the exam.

Grading Scale
The grading scale is A-F, where F is a fail.
Assessment Semester
Fall. Students with valid approvals on their mandatory assignments may also be assessed early in the spring semester.
Reading List

The reading list consists of approx. 200 pages of in-depth material

The reading list will be ready by 1 Jul for the fall semester, and 1 Dec for the spring semester.

Course Evaluation
Evaluation of the course is carried out in accordance with the University of Bergen quality assurance system.

The program committee is responsible for the academic content and structure of the study program, and for the quality of all the subjects therein.
