Radiology for Manual Therapists
Objectives and Content
Through the lectures and workshops in radiology, the aim is to give the student an introduction to diagnostic imaging and its possibilities and limitations, focusing on image diagnostics related to the human musculoskeletal system. The students will learn to interpret descriptions of X-ray images, including CT scan and MRI, and connect these to clinical findings.
The teaching in radiology covers methodology, procedures, picture analyses, as well as indications and algorithms. Radiological findings are related to clinical findings, focusing on the musculoskeletal system.
On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
The student has:
- basic knowledge about radiological modalities, technical composition and function.
- knowledge about practical execution of examinations with the different modalities
- knowledge about the principles in image analysis when diagnosing disease by means of morphological and functional changes expressed in different images, e.g. ultrasound, MRI, CT and X-rays
The student is able:
- to assess indications for use of different procedures, and be familiar with algorithms for explaining different clinical problems
- to adapt suitable treatment measures based on clinical information and the radiological examination
The student can:
- communicate theoretical issues, analyses and insights in the field with both researcher and the general public
Required Previous Knowledge
Applicants must provide documents showing that they hold a bachelor's degree in physiotherapy or equivalent, and Norwegian authorization as a physiotherapist. In addition, they must submit documentation that they have begun or completed a master's degree program in manual therapy, which is not inferior in content and quality to the Clinical Master Program in Manual Therapy at University of Bergen.
Teaching and learning methods
This one week introductory course to radiology is focusing on nerve-, muscle- and skeletal radiology: The main focus in this part is to give a thorough introduction to image diagnostics related to the nerve- and musculoskeletal system. Image analysis is related to the most important diseases within the musculoskeletal system and to differential diagnostic assessments. The teaching material include images from different cases or patients.

Forms of Assessment
There is a 2 hour written exam with multiple choice questions at the end of the one-week-course. Achieving the grade Pass requires right answers to at least 60% of the questions.
Pass / Fail
Literature that composes the basis for the students learning activity will be suggested.
