Objectives and Content
The course aims at providing students with a specialization in relevant historical themes in the period from the Antiquity to c. 1750. The Department usually provides teaching in one or several such themes, depending on available resources. Students choose one theme (per course). The themes may vary according to available teaching resources and research interests. The Department announces the themes that are offered before the start of the semester.
The course may be included in a specialization in history.
The following themes are offered for the autumn semester 2022:
Tema 3: Midtøsten på romersk tid/the Middle East under Rome
Tema 4: Epidemiar og samfunn 1350-1850: Konsekvensar, tiltak og reaksjonar
Tema 5: "Om hor og andre åndelige sager": Middelalderhistorie fra rettsperspektiv
Tema 6: Den gudfryktige staten ¿ kjetteri og kritisk tenkning
Tema 7: De europeiske trolldomsprosessene

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:
After successful completion of the course, the student has good knowledge on and is familiar with central perspectives, explanations and theories within the theme. The student is also familiar with central historical methods and methodical aspects of historical research.
Skills:
The student is able to problematize, use relevant scholarly terminology, and discuss central historical questions related to the chosen theme. He/she is able to evaluate critically historical presentations in scholarly works and historical sources, and to analyze historical data provided through sources and literature. He/she is able to draw his/her own conclusions on this basis.
General competences:
The student is able to study an extensive research literature, to communicate knowledge and perspectives from this literature, and to reason in writing for his/her own conclusions drawn on this basis.

Access to the Course
The course is open to students enrolled at the University of Bergen.
The themes have limited capacity, themes are allocated according to the "first come, first served" principle.
Teaching and learning methods
Approximately twelve lectures.
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
In order to take the written examination, the student must have passed a compulsory written paper consisting of maximum 1500 words. The paper must have references to sources and literature used in the papers, and a reference list.
The extent, deadline for submission and guidelines for this compulsory requirement is announced on Mitt UiB in the beginning of the teaching semester.
The passed compulsory requirement is valid for one semester following the teaching semester in which it was passed.
Forms of Assessment
A six-hour written examination of maximum 3000 words.
Compulsory requirements must be passed and valid in order to take the written examination.
An examination will also be held in the course-free semester (spring). This exam is only open for students with valid compulsory requirements.

Grading Scale
Grades will be set using a scale of A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade. Grade F is a fail.
