Science Project in Earth Science

Undergraduate course

Course description

Objectives and Content

Objectives:

The course provides advanced Bachelors students with the opportunity to participate in a research project in collaboration with an experienced biologist. Please notice that you cannot be accepted to the course until you have a project with one of the scientific staff at the Department. It is the student's responsibility to find a project and a supervisor.

The student will receive a succinct summary of the supervisor's research project, including the methods used and the reasoning behind the experimental design. The exact nature of the student's participation in the project will be defined by the supervisor.

The extent of the course is defined by the credits awarded (10, which is 1/3 of a full-time workload per semester), and should therefore be approx. 200 hours of field/laboratory research, reading of assigned papers, and report writing. The timing of the course will vary depending on the schedules of the student and the supervisor.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

The students will experience geosciences "from the inside". They learn about research design, geological methods, data collection: how geological research is conducted. Students also gain experience in scientific writing and verbal presentation of scientific work.

After completing the course, the student may have

  • Our participants in research
  • gained experience with / participated in data collection and data disclosure
  • Insight into research design and scientific methodology
  • Experience with scientific writing and presentation of scientific work
  • use geological knowledge in relevant research work
  • Reflect on the relationship between theory and practical research work
