Objectives and Content

Objectives

The course aims to provide training in computer-based data acquisition, analysis and control using standard measurement instruments and process instrumentation.

Content
The course covers topics such as PC-based communication with measurement instruments via standard communication protocols, as well as input and output of electrical voltage signals using standard multifunction data acquisition boards. In addition, the course covers topics as signal response of 1st and 2nd order systems, calibration of standard temperature measurement systems and control of dynamic systems. Furthermore, the course includes data acquisition and control of a two phase (air/water) flow rig.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student

  • has advanced knowledge on use of measurement instruments and standard communication protocols between PCs and measurement instruments and between PCs and experiments
  • has a thorough knowledge on linearization of processes and decoupling coupled processes
  • has a thorough knowledge of the functionality of a two-phase flow rig

Skills

The student

  • can manage experimental setups and use standard measurement instruments
  • can use PC-based data acquisition and presentation of measurement data
  • can determine the physical model of a multivariable control system, and control the system using PID based control algorithms

General competence

The student

  • can apply his/her competence and skills related to PC-based data acquisition, analysis and control to manage advanced projects in measurement technology
  • can plan and implement experimental team based project work and write a laboratory report based on predefined guidelines

Access to the Course

Access to the course requires admission to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

The course has a limited capacity and enrolment is regulated through the process of admission to courses with limited capacity.

Also, the following applies regarding access to the course:

  • In the spring semester, the course is reserved for students enrolled in the Integrated Master's Programme in Ocean Technology and the Master's Programme in Ocean Technology. If there is free capacity, other students can be enrolled. Enrolment of other students is regulated by the rules applying to admission to courses with limited capacity.
  • In the autumn semester, the course is reserved for students enrolled in the Integrated Master's Programme in Medical Technology and the Master's Programme in Physics. If there is free capacity, other students can be enrolled. Enrolment of other students is regulated by the rules applying to admission to courses with limited capacity.

Teaching and learning methods

The teaching method is by lectures and laboratory exercises.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

Approved laboratory reports for each laboratory assignment. Approved compulsory assignments are valid for 2 subsequent semesters.

Forms of Assessment

The forms of assessment are:

  • Approved laboratory journals counting for 30% of the total grade.
  • Oral exam (practical/ theoretical) in the laboratory (30 minutes) counting for 70% of the total grade.

Grading Scale

The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.

Assessment Semester

Spring semester and autumn semester. The possibility to take a new exam early in the semester is only available to students who are entitled to a new examination due to valid documentation of absence from the final exam in the previous semester.

Reading List

The reading list will be available within June 1st for the autumn semester and January 1st for the spring semester.

Course Evaluation

The course will be evaluated by the students in accordance with the quality control system at UiB and the department.
