Both fall and spring
The seminar series for one semester will be planned with eight seminars with lectures and comments to the students work, four seminars with presentations from the candidate's PhD work, three Midway evaluations, a mountain seminar of two days and also including oarticipation in master seminars where the PhD students can have an active role as chair. Some changes may occur from semester to semester; for instance the number of Midway evaluations may differ from semester to semester, and the teachers involved will also differ. The place for mountain seminars will also differ, according to budget issues.
A maximum of 3 ECTS can be obtained per semester from this seminar series. A PhD candidate can participate and get credits from three semesters maximum. The candidates can attend more seminars and semesters if they want to, but the credits will be restricted to three semesters. This will give a total maximum of 9 credits for participation in this seminar series.

Form of assessment
There will be no exam, but each student must document participation in research seminars, midway evaluations, master presentations and mountain seminar. The participation will be summarized and the student will get a confirmation of the achieved ECTS for each semester. Attendance will be noted for all activities.
Who may participate
All PhD candidates at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Bergen who desire to be affiliated to the CIH Research School will be accepted as students. Candidates at CIH will be given preference if the number of candidates is too high.

Content in the seminar series
1. Seminars with lectures/comments to work from PhD candidates
- To write an introduction of a paper

- How to structure a PhD thesis
The structure of these seminars will be like this:
- The candidates will be asked to read and learn a text about the topic, using the books: Day RA, Gastel B. How to write and publish a scientific paper/ Gustavii B. How to prepare scientific doctoral dissertation based on research articles/ Hall GM. How to write a paper. Also recent and relevant scientific articles about these topics will be chosen for the seminars.
- The students will be asked to prepare their own work for the seminar (for instance a draft of an article). An article or partof an article (e.g an introduction or methods) should be provided by one cadidate and the other candidates should also bring questions related to their own writing to the seminar group. 2-3 of these examples will be discussed thoroughly in the seminar, the other participants will be able to explain their problems shortly and discuss them with the group.
- The seminars will be held on Wednesdays at 1400-1530. The first hour will be a general lecture by a professor and the next hour will consist of discussions related to the work performed by the candidates.
2. Seminars with presentation from PhD work
We will have four seminars discussing presentations from the PhD work from 4 PhD candidates. These students will prepare their presentations beforehand and send the presentations to co-candidates who must read them and prepare comments.
3. Midway seminars
We will have three midway seminars. The presenting midway candidates send their report to co-PhD-candidates and these PhD-candidates prepare questions and comments on the work. They will be given the opportunity to raise the questions in a discussion after listening to the midway presentation and comments from evaluators.
The midway evaluations at CIH are official seminars, included in the research seminars at the research school. The presentation and discussion (both with evaluators and students) is performed at first, and the evaluators sum up the result from the evaluation afterwards (without audience).
4. Mountain seminar
Each semester will have a mountain seminar, where the candidates and some of the professors go to the mountains outside the city to discuss scientific issues. The seminar can be one day in the mountains and one day in Bergen or two days in the mountains (depending on the budget). The students are asked to prepare for the seminar by reading relevant text - 1 hour. The topic will be on presentation skills:
- Oral presentation - spring
In the spring they are also asked to prepare an oral presentation from their own PhD work. During the first part of the seminar, all students must present their work and get critical comments concerning their presentation skills - and they will learn to give critical comments to the other students. The maximum of students for such a seminar seems to be twelve; otherwise it will be too long to include presentations from everyone. This first part will be succeeded by a follow up seminar, where the students must prepare a new and improved presentation, and present it again to the others and receive critical comments.
- Poster presentation - autumn
Similarly, for the autumn, the students will prepare for making poster presentations. They must in this situation prepare a poster beforehand showing their research results, and the posters will be presented and discussed critically in the group of PhD candidates.
5. Master seminars
Master seminars are held most Wednesdays at 1300 - 1400 at CIH, with two master students presenting their work. Each PhD candidate will be assigned to chair at least one of these seminars during their stay in Bergen. The master students must send their presentations to the professor responsible for the seminar beforehand, and the professor will forward the presentation to the PhD candidates who will attend as chair. The PhD candidates then will prepare questions and comments.
