Course description

Objectives and Content

The course will constitute the theoretical foundation for the independent work the student will conduct for their master¿s thesis, and aims to facilitate working with a concrete research question. The content of the course must be developed in consultation with a supervisor. It can be of either linguistic or literary theoretical nature, or reflect an interdisciplinary approach to the research question that the master¿s thesis will explore.

Upon completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills, and general competence:

Knowledge

Upon completetion of the course, the student will

  • have obtained knowledge about relevant research within their chosen field
  • have a good understanding of methodological questions related to the theoretical foundation for the master¿s thesis

Skills

Upon completion of the course, the student will

  • be able to use the acquired knowledge in independent analyses within their area of study
  • be able to communicate knowledge from their chosen area of study in Italian
  • be able to provide independent teaching and conduct development projects in the field

General competence

Upon completion of the course, the student will

  • be able to plan and conduct tasks that span a relatively substantial period of time
  • be able to create and complete a project requiring rigorous engagement with theory
  • be able to work independently with analytical questions related to the area of study
  • be proficient in high level Italian

Teaching and learning methods
Teaching is comprised of 10 hours individual supervision (in person or digital) for each student during the semester.
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

To qualify for the exam in ITAL304, the student must have submitted a reading list to the department no later than one month after the exam registration deadline.

Approved compulsory assignments are only valid for the semester of completion and for the following semester.

Forms of Assessment
A 30-minute oral exam where the candidate is asked to cover one or more theoretical problems from the reading list. The candidate has one week to prepare their presentation, and the examination panel (course instructor and examiner) can ask questions during a subsequent discussion.
Grading Scale
The department uses a grading scale ranging from A to F. F is a failing grade.
Assessment Semester
Spring. Early in the fall semester, there are also assessments of the students with approved compulsory assignments from the previous semester.
Reading List
The theory reading list will be selected in consultation with a supervisor.
Course Evaluation
The course will be evaluated in accordance with University of Bergen¿s quality assurance system.
