Objectives and Content
This course offers students a further introduction to modern Mandarin. Students will develop practical writing and speaking skills in modern Mandarin as well as an expanded vocabulary, and will learn a number of Chinese characters. They will practice writing and using simple and common Chinese characters. The course also gives a practical review of the basic elements of grammar.
After completing the course, students will be able to read and write simple texts and have conversations about everyday topics in Mandarin.

Teaching and learning methods
Instruction is organized as a series of lectures and group work. There will be 4 hours of online instruction a week for 10 weeks, as well as an introductory seminar in Bergen.
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
This course has frequent at-home assignments. In order to be eligible to take the exam, students must turn in assignments throughout the semester, and have 75% of them approved.
Forms of Assessment
The exam has two parts:
1) A three-hour written exam in grammar and reading and writing skills.
2) An oral exam in Chinese.
Both parts of the exam must be passed the same semester. The written exam is worth 60% and the oral exam is worth 40% of the final course grade.
It is possible to take the exam in the fall following the semester of instruction. In order to take the exam in the fall, the compulsory course assignments must be approved during the semester of instruction.
The grading scale A-F is used, where F is a failing grade.

The teaching will be evaluated according to the quality assurance system of the University of Bergen, which will include student feedback.
