Objectives and Content

The course aims at providing students with no or little knowledge in chemistry a basis for further studies in chemistry or other natural sciences.

The understanding on how the Nature and Life itself is built from chemical compounds is central in all natural sciences. Chemistry is the science of the structure, properties and reactions of matter. The following themes will be treated: Atoms and molecules, the Periodic table, stoichiometry (mole, concentration, gas pressure), reaction types, chemical equilibrium, basic thermochemistry, inorganic chemistry, (metal complexes), organic chemistry (compounds, nomenclature, functional groups). Parts of the curriculum can be illustrated in practical demonstrations.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the course KJEM100 the students will be able to:

  • name and write formulas for chemicals
  • describe different reaction types in water
  • perform stoichiometric calculations
  • describe the structure of atoms and molecules
  • describe types of matter, mixtures and the forces between molecules
  • apply the principles for chemical equilibrium to carry out calculations
  • describe different classes

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

Mandatory written exercises (valid for five following semesters).

Compulsory work must be submitted within the given deadlines for the course. Approval of the compulsory work is necessary to get admittance to the written exam.

Forms of Assessment

The portfolio assessment is based on:

Midterm exam (2h) (accounts for 30% of the final grade)
Final written exam (4h) (accounts for 70% of the final grade).

Supplementary exam-regulations:

1. The mandatory written exercises are valid the 5 following semesters.

2. Midterm and final exams are only valid in the same semester as they are taken.

3. In semesters with teaching:

a). Students without approved mandatory written exercises from previously semesters must participate in the portfolio assessment.

b). Students with approved mandatory written exercises from previously semesters can


I). Participate in the portfolio assessment, and thus take both the midterm exam and the final exam, which will account for 30% and 70% of the grade, respectively. Also the mandatory written exercise must be done.
Students who choose this option must inform the Department of Chemistry before the deadline for exam registration.


II). Participate only in the finale exam, which then will account for the grade alone

4. In semesters without teaching:

a). Students with approved mandatory written exercises from previously semesters can take a final exam, which then will account for 100% of the grade alone.

b). Students without approved mandatory written exercises from previously semesters can not take exam.

Non-programmable calculator, according to permitted models listed in Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences regulations.

Grading Scale

The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.

  • For written exams, please note that the start time may change from 09:00 to 15:00 or vice versa until 14 days prior to the exam.
