Objectives and Content

The course gives a thorough description of the laws of thermodynamics, as well as chosen subjects within reaction kinetics. The course builds on fundamental concepts in thermodynamics and kinetics that were introduced in KJEM110. Topics covered include chemical equilibrium, phase equilibria, phase diagrams and transitions, and properties of liquid mixtures and solutions. The course also contains a laboratory part where some parts of the theoretical syllabus is illustrated. In addition, the laboratory course provides the students with hands-on experience with assessing the uncertainty of qualitative measurement data.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the course KJEM210 the student will have the following:

Knowledge:

The student is able to

  • Explain thermodynamic laws, variables and functions and their practical significance
  • Derive important thermodynamic relations
  • Perform numerical calculations of thermodynamic variables
  • Apply thermodynamic principles to analyze practical problems

Skills:

The student is able to

  • Use Excel to manage experimental measurements and present them in graphs
  • Document laboratory experiments

Competences:

The student is able to

  • Disseminate and evaluate results from chemistry experiments in the laboratory
  • Evaluate the uncertainty in quantitative measurements

Required Previous Knowledge

KJEM110 or equivalent (basic principles of general chemistry)

Recommended Previous Knowledge

MAT101(basic principles of gneral chemistry and mathematics)

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

  • In order to obtain approval of the mandatory activities, and therefore gain access to the final exam, one must submit mandatory assignments of a satisfactory standard within the set deadlines. Mandatory assignments should be your own work
  • Serious violations of the HSE rules wil lead to a loss of the right to complete the laboratory course.
  • it is not possible to use more then 3 attempts (semesters) to complete the laboratory course.

Grading Scale

The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.

Reading List

The reading list will be available within June 1st for the autumn semester and December 1st for the spring semester.
