Autumn

Objectives and Content

The course addresses analysis of organic compounds using spectroscopic methods as infrared (IR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, as well as mass spectrometry (MS). The course concentrates on interpretation of data, and the focus will be to understand and to utilize data from NMR and MS.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of

knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student

  • has knowledge of the principles of the mentioned spectroscopic methods
  • has knowledge of the use of spectroscopic methods as tools in organic structural elucidation within science, industry and health sector.

Skills

The student

  • can interpret spectroscopic data from IR, UV, NMR and MS, individually and in combination, to elucidate the structure of simple organic compounds
  • can solve structural problems using literature data from organic analytical methods
  • can select relevant spectroscopic method best suited for a given problem

General competence

The student

  • can master group work
  • can solve a complex problem by combining pieces of information
