Radiology

Postgraduate course

Course description

Objectives and Content

Aim:

Through the teaching in radiology, the aim is to give the student an introduction to image diagnostics and its possibilities and limitations, focusing on image diagnostics related to the human musculoskeletal system. The students will learn to interpret descriptions of X-ray images, including CT scan and MRI, and connect these to clinical findings.

Content:

The teaching in radiology covers methodology, procedures, picture analyses, as well as indications and algorithms. Radiological findings are related to clinical findings, focusing on the musculoskeletal system.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge:

The student should hold

* hold basic knowledge about radiological modalities, technical composition and function.

* hold knowledge about practical execution of examinations with the different modalities

* hold knowledge about the principles in image analysis when diagnosing disease by means of morphological and functional changes expressed in different images, e.g. ultrasound, MRI, CT and X-rays

Skills:

The student should be

* able to assess indications for use of different procedures, and be familiar with algorithms for explaining different clinical problems

* should be able to adapt suitable treatment measures based on clinical information and the radiological examination

General competence:

The student can communicate theoretical issues, analyses and insights in the field with both researcher and the general public

Semester of Instruction

Third semester (spring)
Teaching and learning methods

The teaching in medical radiology is divided into three modules:

1. One week of introductory course to radiology focusing on nerve-, muscle- and skeletal radiology: The main focus in this part is to give a thorough introduction to image diagnostics related to the nerve and musculoskeletal system. Image analysis is related to the most important diseases within the musculoskeletal system and to differential diagnostic assessments. The teaching material includes images from different cases or patients.

2. Decentralized part; this is an expansion of the teaching in medical radiology and consists of 1-2 days of visitation at a hospital or an X-ray clinic. The student arranges his or her own visit. At this visit, the students should participate in the preparation of radiological examinations, and attend the demonstration. The student shall gain insight in how an image diagnostic examination is performed, in order to be able to inform the patient about this in advance as the referring manual therapist

3. Case report with review; This is also mainly decentralized in form of group work together with their clinical supervisor to promote knowledge about radiological findings related to different clinical problems. The students will prepare a case report, preferably electronically, and the cases are reviewed plenary in the last semester. The main focus is on general principles for image diagnostics and indications for different radiological procedures related to the musculoskeletal system. The students will gain knowledge about the preparation of the patients, practical implementation of the procedures and common explanatory algorithms.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
Compulsory attendance
Forms of Assessment

2 hours written exam at the end of the one-week-course.

The case report is assessed as approved/not approved.

The students` radiological knowledge may also be evaluated as part of the final practical exam in manual therapy, where the student should demonstrate if possible image diagnostic findings correspond to clinical findings. The candidate should suggest potentially further radiological examinations related to the nerve and musculoskeletal system.

The students must document completed visitation in a hospital or X-ray clinic.
