Course description
Objectives and Content
Aims:
To educate and train health professionals to use and understand diagnostic ultrasound of the musculoskeletal system. Provide the student with the confidence to apply the knowledge and principles gained from Module 1 in a clinical environment. Demonstrate qualitative good ultrasound scans which together with the clinical examination make a complete diagnostic examination.
Content:
- Use accepted algorithms for demonstrating ultrasound scans of upper and lower extremities.
- Demonstrate pathology on ultrasound scans in upper and lower extremity.
- Formulate good rapports from ultrasound scans.
- Clinical mentoring for practice based learning
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence. The student should be able:
Knowledge
- To critically reflect on current literature and principles of Ultrasonography to assist in the interpretation of clinical ultrasound scans.
- To demonstrate a detailed anatomical knowledge of pathological upper and lower extremities to assist in the interpretation of ultrasound imaging.
Skills
- To create hypotheses to assist in the clinical diagnosis of musculoskeletal pathology from ultrasound images of the upper and lower extremity of healthy adults.
- To generate consistent high quality musculoskeletal Ultrasonography imaging as a resource for enhancing clinical intervention and diagnosis.
General competence
- To reflect on the skills required to generate hypotheses as a resource for enhancing clinical and diagnosis.

Teaching methods:
A 2 days Tutor led tutorial and practise at Queen Mary University in London, England.
Supervised clinical scanning of records and procedures from nominated mentor.
Required and personal reading.
Self directed learning.
Web based learning.
Review of clinical based experience.
Review of mentor engagement.

Forms of Assessment
Assessment methods which enable students to demonstrate the learning outcomes for the module:
Submission of a work based portfolio of a minimum 250 cases including a reflective review of the work-based placement.
