Course description
Course content
The aim of the course is to give the candidates thorough knowledge about different ways of analyzing qualitative research material and their basis in varying theoretical perspectives and traditions.
The course is a continuation of the course MEDKVFORSK, where the focus is a deepening in qualitative research methods in general. In MEDKVFORSK2 the intention is to go deeper into the analysis based on different research traditions as pragmatism, phenomenology, the narrative tradition and ethnography. A particular focus on how theory of knowledge and methodological preconditions within the different traditions will have consequences for the analysis. To develop the candidates¿ analytic abilities when analyzing concrete research material is underscored. Hence, assignments and oral presentations will be emphasized, expecting a high degree of student activity and independance.

Knowledge
The candidate:
- have thorough insights in and advanced understanding of the different traditions¿ theoretical and methodological consequences for analysis of qualitative data
- can assess the appropriateness of different methods for analysis of qualitative data

- is able to demonstrate that the method for analysis is based on the aim of the study and characteristics of the research material
- is able to reflect on and challenge scientific methods and approaches in one¿s own field and related fields

The candidate:
- is able to conduct qualitative analysis based on well established criteria of quality and with high degree of scientific integrity
- is able to identify ethical dilemmas and challenges related to analysis of qualitative data
- shows thorough insight in possibilities and limitations when choosing methodological approaches in analysis of qualitative data

Pre-requirements
Master degree
The candidates must have a research project with a qualitative research design as (part of) their PhD research.
Compulsory Requirements
- mandatory participation in the entire course
- short written description of own project aim, research questions, design), and suggested procedure/method for analysis and reasons for the choice. This description must be handed in together with the application for taking part in the course.
- oral presentation (incl. power-point presentation with notes) as to choice of procedure/method for analysis and preliminary analysis of research material from own project (session I)
- oral presentation (incl. power-point presentation with notes) as to analysis of a text handed out by the course managers (session II)
- «opponent» after one of the other PhD-candidate¿s presentations (receives power-point presentation with notes prior to the session)
- actively contributing in the discussions
- orient oneself in the literature
Form of assessment
Two assignments related to analysis, oral presentation of one individually and one in a group, power-point presentation with notes must be handed in for both assignments prior to the sessions, feedback from course managers.

Supplementary course information
The course will be organized in two sessions: the first one lasts for three days, the last one day. Preparation shall include short description of one¿s own project, included aim, research question and methodological approach (300 words). Additionally, suggested or choice of analytic procedures/method and the reasons for the choice as to the research materials characteristics and the anchoring of the study in research tradition (700 words), altogether 1000 words. The description shall be handed in together with the application for taking part in the course.
Scope of the work: Session I: Oral individual presentation of suggested analytic procedures/methods and reasons therefore, included sketch of preliminary analysis (15 min.), opposition from co-candidate (10 min.), feedback from course managers (10 min.) and discussion in the group (10 min), altogether 45 min. on each candidate. Session II: each group gives an oral presentation of group assignment (analysis of text handed out by the course managers) (15 min.), discussion in the group (15 min.), feedback from the course managers (15 min.), altogether 45 min. for each presentation.
The course lasts for four days, about five hours a day, altogether 20 hours. Preparations for taking part (orient oneself in the literature, prepare description of one¿s own project and power-point-presentation with notes, oral presentation and opposition) about 30 hours. Working with the group assignment between sessions, prepare power-point presentation with notes and presenting orally, about 25 hours. Altogether 20+25+25=80 hours, 3 credits.
