Objectives and Content

The course MEDOD1 introduces the students to the medical and odontological education.

The students will receive knowledge regarding cellular and chemical processes, will learn of the connections between social inequalities and health, as well as basic assessment and treatment of medical emergencies. They will also be taught medical nomenclature.

Subjects of the semester:

  • Introductory course
  • Cells, bloc 1
  • Inequality and health
  • The acutely ill patient
  • Medical nomenclature - Nomenclature

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student shall:

Knowledge:

  • demonstrate basic and detailed knowledge in chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology, cell physiology and histology
  • possess knowledge of medical databases
  • possess knowledge of how social inequalities, both at national and global level, affects health, and how interventions within and outside the health services can affect these inequalities
  • possess the required knowledge to assess vital bodily functions, and recognize important conditions that constitute medical emergencies.

Skills:

  • be able to perform searches for medical and dental information
  • have knowledge of the Latin terminology of anatomy and diseases as a prerequisite for learning the principles of medical terms and their structure
  • be able to initiate life-saving procedures

General competence:

  • possess knowledge of thinking, methods and ideals which characterize the medical and odontological disciplines

Access to the Course

Cand.med.-degree programme, or Master of Dentistry.

Teaching and learning methods

A varied array of teaching techniques will be used. Detailed information will be communicated via Mitt UiB / email.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

Participation in courses, taking tests and written assignments during the semester, is mandatory.

Forms of Assessment

5 hour online written exam.

Examination Support Material

All calculators, model is subject to limitations determined by UiB.

Simple, bilingual dictionary, that must be reviewable, meaning that one of the languages must be English, or a Scandinavian language.

Grading Scale

A-F

Course Evaluation

Written evaluation using electronic/digital evaluation tool.

Regular meetings between course coordinators and the student representatives.
