Course description

Objectives and Content

MEDOD2 is based on MEDOD1, and introduces the students to the medical and dentistry fields.

The students obtain knowledge regarding biomedicine and cell biology as basic academic fields within dentistry and medicine, as well as theoretical and practical knowledge regarding medical statistics and ethics.

  • Cells, second bloc
  • Medical statistics
  • Ethics

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student:

 

Knowledge:

  • demonstrates basic and detailed knowledge of biochemistry, genetics, cell biology, cell physiology and histology, and can describe examples of disease mechanisms.
  • has thorough knowledge of how cellular processes of diet, physical exercise and lifestyles affect health and illness
  • is able to account for probability theory, descriptive statistics, diagnostic tests, fundamental distribution, estimation and testing of hypotheses, regression, survival analysis and basic methods for analysing randomised clinical trials 
  • is able to account for ethical dilemmas one might face as a student and as a professional, and central ethical issues within medicine and dentistry

 

Skills

 

  • can solve problems within biomedicine and cell biology in connection with topics taught in the course
  • can give a histological description of selected tissue sections using microscopy
  • can describe observations numerically and graphically, perform statistical analysis, and understand basic principles and analyses for randomised clinical trials
  • can identify and analyse ethical dilemmas and justify ethical decisions that pertains to patients and society

 

General competence

 

  • can make use of biomedical knowledge to understand biochemical, cellular and physiological processes within illness and health.
  • is able to critically assess use of statistics in medical literature.
  • can cooperate with fellow students in theoretical group work and practical exercises.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
Participation in practical courses, TBL and tests and assignments during the semester is mandatory.
Forms of Assessment
4 hour digital written exam.

The reading list will be available by June 1st for the autumn semester and December 1st for the spring semester.
Course Evaluation
Written evaluation using electronic/digital evaluation tool. Regular meetings between course coordinators and the student representatives.

Simple, bilingual dictionary, that must be reviewable, meaning that one of the languages must be English, or a Scandinavian language.
