Course content

Participants will be exposed to the knowledge and insight surrounding the interview as applied by Pierre Bourdieu and his philosophical heir, Francine Muel-Dreyfus. This will include an introduction into Bourdieu and Muel-Dreyfus´ practical application of interview in specific empirical research, as well as a better understanding of the terms prosopography, network, field, capital and habitus.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

After completing the course, the students should be able to

  • demonstrate how Bourdieu, his successor Francine Muel-Dreyfus, and current researchers use their theories, concepts and approaches as tools in the interview situation

Skills

After completing the course, the students should be able to

  • explain how the concepts in practical theory and field theory in this tradition differ from other research theories

General skills

After completing the course, the students should be able to

  • explain the use of life history and qualitative interviews as tools in praxeological approaches in work within the field concept of semiprofessions

Examination structure: Evaluation of oral presentations and written essay. Pass/fail

Programme

Teaching methods: The course will combine lecture with applicable texts presented by participating researchers and students. Further, syllabus texts will be read to establish a foundation for both written and oral work, including writing and presentation of essays during the course.
