Media Rhetoric

Undergraduate course

Course description

Objectives and Content

The purpose of the course is to give students historical and theoretical insight into the relationship between rhetoric, genres, media and communication technologies and to enable students to analyze examples of rhetoric with a view to how genres, media and communication technologies have an impact on and interact with their rhetoric content, form and function.

MEVI203 is about how people use media and communication technologies in their rhetoric, and how media and communication technologies have an impact on people's rhetoric. We examine how media technologies have an impact on expression and content in communication, and look at what consequences this has for our way of thinking, communicating and acting rhetorically. In exploring the relationship between genre, medium, technology and rhetoric, MEVI203 will delve deeper into one or more subjects each semester. The subject varies from year to year. It can be, for example, advertising, documentary films, political rhetoric, press photos, the internet, social media, video games, entertainment or televised debates.
