The first lecture/orientation meeting is compulsory, which means you will lose your spot if you do not attend class that day. The time of the first lecture/orientation meeting can be found in the schedule on the course website or on the "Mitt UiB" learning platform.

Objectives and Content

The course introduces and looks into the structure and function of biomolecules: synthesis and properties of cellular macromolecules, basic properties of enzymes, principles of metabolism, bioenergetics, signal transduction, regulation of gene expression and function of biomolecules in cell structure and differentiation. The course will also include a survey of important principles in experimental biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology. The course is obligatory for a master¿s degree in molecular biology for students in bioinformatics without MOL101Molecular biology/MOL100 Introduction to molecular biology + MOL200 Metabolism:Reactions, Regulations and Compartmentalization, or equivalent.

Learning Outcomes

The course aims at providing basic knowledge about biological macromolecules and their function in biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology, sufficient for further studies in bioinformatics.

Required Previous Knowledge

Bachelor¿s degree or equivalent with limited background in molecular biology. The course is mainly for master¿s students in bioinformatics.

Recommended Previous Knowledge

Bachelor's degree or equivalent with limited background in molecular biology. The course is mainly for master students in bioinformatics.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

The two first study groups and term paper. The term paper include a written report and short oral presentations of specific scientific topics in molecular biology. Mandatory activity is valid five subsequent semesters.  

Forms of Assessment

Written exam, 4h. Examination support materials: Non- programmable calculator, according to model listed in faculty regulations.

Grading Scale

The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
