Quality assurance of chemical analyses

Postgraduate course

Course description

Objectives and Content

The primary goal of the course is to enable students to develop quality-assured analytical methods fit for purpose. The student must be able to assess the quality of analytical results and methods of analysis ased on their own assessments of the analytical method and quality assurance data. In addition, students can apply what they ave learned by preparing a validation/verification plan and carrying out typical steps in a chemical analysis such as sampling, sample preparation, instrumental analysis and reporting, so that the student understands how each individual step contributes to the measurement uncertainty of the analytical result. Students will gain insight into te validation and quality assurance of chemical methods of analysis as well as the traceability and measurement uncertainty of analytical results. The laboratory exercises uses modern analytical instrumentation and are carried out in an accredited laboratory.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student

  • can compare te quality infrastructure nationally, regionall and internationall and understand how the different part work together
  • can explain how standards, metrology, accreditation, conformity assessment and technical regulations interplay with analytical work in chemical analysis laboratories
  • can apply the principles of validation and verification
  • methods of chemical analysis as well as evaluate traceability and measurement uncertainty in analytical results
  • can analyze and explain how typical steps in a chemical analysis, such as sampling sample preparation, instrumental analysis and reporting contribute to uncertainty in the final result
  • can explain important routines in a modern accredited analysis laboratory

Skills

The student

  • can prepare, plan and omplement a plan for verification and validation to e able to assess whether a method is suitable for the object
  • can assess the quality of an analytical result based on knowledge of the analytical method and quality assurance data
  • can use common methods of quality assurance of chemical analses
  • can use common methods of sample preparation of beological material and selected modern laboratory equipment and instrumentation for chemical analysis

General competence

The student

  • understands the general principles of quality assurance and how the principles can be transferred and used in other contects
  • can apply basic statistical methods
  • can plan and perform accurate work in the laboratory and create collaboration in the laboratory
  • can create good laboratory routines, with special emphasis on safety and ensuring analytical quality in a laboratory
  • can use modern laboratory equipment and instrumentation for chemical analysis
