Objectives and Content
The aim of the thesis is for students to gain experience of scholarly work by planning, carrying out and presenting (in writing and orally) a scientific project.
The students should document that they can think and work in a scientific manner.
The thesis should be on a nutrition-related topic/problem. It can be either an empirical study or a literature review.
It is possible to start during the 5th semester. The thesis must be submitted at the end of the 6th semester. The programme committee will ensure that there is a list of relevant topics. All scientists involved in teaching the bachelor programme can submit a topic and can serve as supervisors. The thesis can be written in Norwegian or English.
The students must present their thesis to each other in a seminar (mandatory participation).
At the end of the course, the students are expected to be able to:
- orient oneself in nutrition related scientific literature
- use references in a scholarly way
- carry out a limited scientific project under supervision
- evaluate and present scientific results (in writing and orally)
Required Previous Knowledge
Completion of at least 120 ECTS in the bachelor program in human nutrition.
Teaching Methods and Extent of Organized Teaching
Lectures on scientific methods, the use of scientific references and libraries, statistics and presentation techniques.
The students are expected to work independently under supervision.
The thesis should be of about 5,000 to 8,000 words (without references, appendices, tables). Students are expected to give an oral presentation of the thesis (10 minutes) in addition to a discussion (max. 10 minutes).
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
Participation at the library courses and a bachelor seminar where the students present their thesis.
Forms of Assessment
Individual written thesis and an adjusting oral presentation. The adjusting oral presentation can adjust the grade of the thesis,as long as the student has passed, by one grade in either direction. Each student will be evaluated individually.
Grading scale A-F
The Institute strives at continually improving their study programs and welcome the feedback of students in the form of organized student evaluations. The evaluation results will be used to revise the study programs, curriculum and teaching methods.
