Objectives and Content

The aim is to give the students knowledge of the development, anatomy and histology of the human organ systems. The emphasis is on the normal anatomical structure and development of the head and neck. The teaching in macroscopic and microscopic anatomy and embryology includes the following topics:

The anatomical and histological structure of the nervous, circulatory, vascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary and endocrine systems as well as senses.

In addition, the development of some organ systems is taught.

The development, regional and functional anatomy of the head and neck is taught in detail on oral and nasal cavities, pharynx, larynx, osteology, muscles, innervation, vascular system, salivary glands, temporomandibular joint and selected topographical areas.

Learning Outcomes

After completion of the course, the student should be able to:

Knowledge

  • Know definitions in embryology, histology and anatomy (also in Latin).
  • Describe development and structure of the organ systems as a basis for understanding normal function and development of diseases in humans.
  • Explain in detail normal development and anatomy of the head and neck.
  • Use the information of normal anatomy to identify deviations from the normal.
  • Use the information of normal anatomy to interpret radiographic findings.
  • Provide anatomical background for clinical problems.
  • Use the information of normal anatomy for clinical intervention.

Skills

  • Identify anatomic structures in anatomical models and in fixed human material.
  • Communicate within the health care team by using relevant anatomical definitions.
  • Take into account the principles of medical ethical rules such as confidentiality (already in dissection) when in contact with patients.
  • Use light microscope.

Competences

  • Work as a member of a group and also independently.

Teaching Methods and Extent of Organized Teaching

The teaching in macroscopic anatomy takes the form of lectures, demonstrations and dissection courses (approx. 50-60 hours in total). Study groups with teacher assistance are also used.

The histology teaching takes the form of lectures and microscopy courses (approx. 60-70 hours in total).

The students keep course records that are submitted and corrected.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

Dissection courses, demonstrations and histology courses are mandatory. The course records must be approved before students can take the final exam.

Forms of Assessment

4 hour written exam and practical station exam. The practical exam accounts for 25% of the total exam result. Before the practical exam, candidates are divided randomly into two groups: 24 students will have macro anatomy as the exam theme, while the remaining students (around 50 %) will have histology as theme.

Examination Support Material

Simple, bilingual dictionary, that must be reviewable, meaning that one of the languages must be English, or a Scandinavian language
