Course description

Objectives and Content

Basic subjects/topics and practical skills in Cariology and subjects/topics associated with different types of direct restorations are taught.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

Students will be able to explain:

  • the principles and methods for direct restorations including preparations, handling of filling materials and placement techniques.
  • properties of filling materials used in direct restorative restorations.
  • hand instruments and rotating instruments
  • the effects of different preparation instruments on dental hard tissues
  • basic topics in cariology

Skills

Students are able to:

  • assess the indications for various types of direct restorations.
  • handle the materials used in direct restorations.
  • perform the manual skills that are necessary to start clinical practice in cariology

General competence

  • Through skills training, the students should have a conscious attitude towards technical quality.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures, seminars, demonstrations and work on models. Two tests will be held during the course, and these must be passed before the final test.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

Clinical courses and seminars.

All teaching is mandatory, except for lectures. The student is responsible for reporting absences, and unexcused absences are not allowed.¿In addition to the attendance requirements, the academic requirements must be met, both in terms of the quality of the work and sufficient practice¿.

In this subject, mandatory activities are valid for two semesters.

Forms of Assessment

The practical presentations are continuously assessed and summarized at the end. The practical and theoretical tests during the course, as well as practical tasks, must be passed before the final test. The final test, a written examination and practical clinical work, must be approved before the student can start treating patients in cariology in the clinic.

Two continuous tests will be arranged shortly for students without valid results. Students who have not achieved valid results after three attempts will be moved to lower classes. The three attempts that belong to each implementation of the subject are counted as one assessment attempt in accordance with UiB¿s regulations on studies §8-1 (1).

Reading List
The reading list will be published on Mitt UiB within one week before startup. The reading list will include the compendium "Ferdighetskurs kariologi", handouts and articles from lectures and seminars.
Course Evaluation
The course is evaluated at least every three years, in accordance with UiBs system of quality assurance.
