Course description

Objectives and Content

The block General Dentistry includes service in the patient reception and continues with and integrates the theoretical and clinical training in endodontics, cariology, periodontics, prosthodontics and community dentistry. Tuition is also given in TMD/ orofacial pain and Gerodontology. In addition, it is appropriate to include Pharmacology, Orthodontics, Biomaterials, Oral Radiology, Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine.

As General Dentistry is based on and continues with elements introduced earlier in the program, it refers both to main theoretical and practical / clinical learning objectives for the complete undergraduate dental curriculum and to the individual subjects.

There is interdisciplinary teaching in order to facilitate a holistic approach to the patient. In addition to the previous subject-specific teaching, the students are introduced to basic knowledge in treatment with implant supported dentures (with emphasis on patient selection, monitoring and maintenance).

Skills

Candidates shall be able to

  • record a medical history, conduct investigations (clinical and radiographic), take samples, interpret findings, diagnose, and make a comprehensive individualized treatment plan
  • Record patient files
  • Use modern scientifically accepted prophylactic and therapeutic agents, materials and techniques
  • Carry out preventive and therapeutic measures for the individual patient
  • Cope with various emergencies that may arise in connection with dental treatment
  • Perform quality control and evaluate the outcome of their treatment (prognosis evaluation), plan the maintenance phase and assess whether further treatment is necessary
  • Investigate and report patients with suspected adverse reactions
  • Ensure that the patients get the benefits/reimbursements they are entitled to from public or private institutions

General qualifications

Students will be able to

  • Cooperate with dental hygienists, dental assistants and other health professionals
  • Display ethical and professional attitudes in relation to patients and to others
  • Evaluate the treatment planning based on individual treatment needs
  • Assess the technical quality of the performed treatment
  • Follow the rules and regulations for health-related activities

Semester of Instruction

7th semester
Teaching and learning methods
The theoretical training includes lectures, seminars and a written summary of literature. During clinical activities there will be a focus on integration of clinical and theoretical teaching with emphasis on an analytical approach to treatment planning. Treatment planning of two patient cases will be performed at the beginning of the clinical course (end of 8th semester) with the teachers, preferably academic staff from all the clinical disciplines, present.
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

At the end of the course the student presents one of his/her cases, and this must be approved together with the rest of the student¿s clinical service before the student can sit the final exam.

All teaching is mandatory, except for lectures. The student is responsible for reporting absences, and unexcused absences are not allowed.¿In addition to the attendance requirements, the academic requirements must be met, both in terms of the quality of the work and sufficient practice.

In this subject, mandatory activities are valid for two semesters
