Objectives and Content

Endodontology deals with etiology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases and injuries involving the dental pulp, and sequelae of these.

Learning Outcomes

The candidate shall be able to prevent, diagnose and treat endodontic diseases and dental injuries involving the dental pulp and the apical periodontium. Further, the candidate shall be able to evaluate the treatment outcome. The graduated candidate is expected to handle and treat most of the endodontic problems occurring in general practice with confidence. The clinical practice should be based on existing knowledge from basic disciplines such as oral microbiology, physiology, oral anatomy and biomaterial sciences.

Knowledge

The candidate should

• be able to explain the preventive endodontic treatment principles and measures intended to preserve pulp vitality based on basic knowledge (anatomy and biology) of the pulp-dentin organ
• be able to carry out an examination of a patient with an endodontic problem
• be able to evaluate the status of the pulp and apical periodontium
• have the necessary skills to diagnose and make a treatment plan that is patient-centred
• be able to diagnose and make a treatment plan for patients who need surgical endodontics
• be able to account for knowledge of dental biomaterials used in surgical endodontics
• have knowledge about the possible implications of systemic disease on surgical endodontic treatment
• be able to explain, and have knowledge of the basic principles and practice of surgical endodontics
• understand and explain the possibility for cross-infections in surgical endodontics, and how to control and prevent these
• know the indications and options for adjunctive treatment such as root resection, root amputation, intentional replantation and crown extension

Skills

The candidate shall be able to

• carry out a comprehensive examination of a patient with an endodontic-related problem
• communicate with the patient in order to obtain complete and relevant anamnestic information, and communicate the endodontic treatment need as part of a comprehensive treatment plan to the patient
• carry out a multi-disciplinary assessment and, based on this, provide necessary endodontic treatment
• handle most of the endodontic treatment needs which occurs in general practice, and evaluate the treatment outcome
• assess the need for restoration of endodontically treated teeth
• handle necessary emergency treatment and follow-up of dental injuries
• perform internal bleaching of teeth that have undergone root canal therapy
• consider, perform and evaluate necessary adjunctive treatment
• perform apexification procedure or treatment that stimulates apexsogenesis of immature permanent teeth with pulpal disease
• communicate with the patient to obtain a complete case history and relevant anamnestic information, and promote surgical endodontics as part of the overall treatment plan
• monitor and evaluate the endodontic treatment (including surgical endodontics)

Teaching Methods and Extent of Organized Teaching

The course includes lectures, demonstrations, seminars, preclinical courses and clinical training. Clinical training (section specific) in endodontology starts after completion of the preclinical course (6th semester) and continues for a full year (7th and 8th semester). The teaching is to be continued as general comprehensive treatment (9th and 10th semester).

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

Approved section specific clinical course is a prerequisite before the exam.
