Objectives and Content

Periodontics is the study of the structures that surround the teeth and attach them to the jaws, and the study of causes, development and treatment of diseases in these structures. The most common diseases are gingivitis (gum inflammation) and marginal periodontitis (tooth attachment disorder). The incidence of these diseases in the adult population is significant. In the majority of the population, the disease can be treated, but about 10% develop a more severe form that often leads to tooth loss. Marginal periodontitis is initiated by accumulation of bacteria (biofilm) on tooth surfaces, and trigger the immune system. In combination with hereditary and environmental factors a destructive process of the periodontium develops. The number of patients receiving implants to replace missing teeth is increasing. Infections can also occur in the supporting tissue around the implants. The pathological factors are considered the same as for gingivitis and periodontitis and require extensive treatment.

• the etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal diseases on a macroscopic, microscopic and molecular biological level
• the interaction between general health, systemic factors / disease and periodontal disease, and how treatment of periodontal disease is conducted in patients with various medical conditions
• epidemiology of periodontal disease and the importance of periodontal health for the population¿s general health as well as the classification of periodontal disease
• periodontal diagnosis, treatment planning, prevention, treatment and prognosis assessment
• the use of antimicrobial agents in periodontal therapy
• social security benefits associated with periodontal treatment

Skills

Students will be able to

• Display extensive skills in clinical periodontics to diagnose disease, assess treatment needs, plan periodontal therapy, and assess prognosis after treatment
• Communicate with patients about periodontal diseases, the causes and natural history, and raise awareness and motivate patients to improve oral health as well as instruct in the use of necessary remedies
• Perform supra- and subgingival scaling by using manual and mechanical devices
• Display clinical skills in non-surgical and surgical treatment of mild and moderate forms of periodontal disease
• Assess the medical risk factors of periodontal treatment in patients with systemic diseases and conditions and be able to distinguish cases that should be referred to specialist treatment
• Have the competence to evaluate the outcome of periodontal treatment, conduct risk assessments, facilitate and carry out periodontal maintenance therapy
• Communicate with specialists in periodontics and other healthcare professionals when treating difficult cases.

General competence

The course shall make the candidate aware of their attitudes to the subject so that when they are qualified dentists they will cooperate well with colleagues and at all times carry out proper treatment both according to the subject's scientific development and health care ethics.

Teaching Methods and Extent of Organized Teaching

The teaching takes place as introductory courses, lectures, clinical case presentations, seminars and clinics.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

Approved clinical course is a prerequisite to sit the exam.
