Periodontology

Postgraduate course

Course description

Objectives and Content

The subject OD3PERIO is the study of the structures that surround the teeth and attach them to the jaws. It is also the study of causes, development and treatment of diseases in these structures. One of the objectives of the subject is to learn about the associations between periodontal and systemic diseases. The two most common periodontal diseases are gingivitis (gum inflammation) and marginal periodontitis (tooth attachment disorder). The subject teaches the student that the incidence of these diseases in the adult population is significant. In the majority of the population, the disease can be treated, but about 10% develop a more severe form that often leads to tooth loss. The subject is communicating that periodontitis is initiated by accumulation of bacteria (biofilm) on tooth surfaces that triggers the immune system. In combination with hereditary and environmental factors, a destructive process of the periodontium develops. The number of patients receiving dental implants to replace missing teeth is increasing. During the course, the student learns that diseases can occur in the supporting tissue around dental implants, that the pathological factors are considered the same as for gingivitis and periodontitis and that diseases in the supporting tissues surrounding dental implants require extensive treatment.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

The student will be able to explain:

  • the concepts of the subject.
  • pre- and paraclinical disciplines included in the study relevant to the subject periodontology.
  • the etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal diseases on a macroscopic, microscopic and molecular biological level.
  • the interaction between general health, systemic factors/ disease and periodontal disease and how treatment of periodontal disease is conducted in patients with various medical conditions.
  • epidemiology of periodontal disease and the importance of periodontal health for the population`s general health as well as the classification of periodontal disease.
  • periodontal diagnosis, treatment planning, prevention, treatment and prognosis assessment.
  • pathogenesis, diagnostics, prevention and treatment with dental implants.
  • the use of antimicrobial agents in periodontal therapy.
  • social security benefits associated with periodontal treatment.

Skills

The student will be able to:

  • Display good skills in clinical periodontics to diagnose disease, assess treatment needs, plan periodontal therapy and assess prognosis after treatment.
  • Communicate with patients about periodontal diseases, the causes and natural history, raise awareness and motivate patients to improve oral health as well as instruct them in the use of necessary remedies.
  • Perform supra- and subgingival scaling by using manual and mechanical devices.
  • Display clinical skills in non-surgical treatment of mild and moderate forms of periodontal disease.
  • Display clinical skills in prevention and treatment of mild disease in peri-implant tissues.
  • Assess the medical risk factors of periodontal treatment in patients with systemic diseases and conditions and be able to distinguish cases that should be referred for specialist treatment.
  • Have the competence to evaluate the outcome of periodontal treatment, conduct risk assessments, facilitate and carry out periodontal maintenance therapy.
  • Communicate with specialists in periodontics and other healthcare professionals when treating difficult cases.

General competence

The course shall make the student aware of her/his attitudes to the subject so that when she/he is a qualified dentist she/he will cooperate well with colleagues and at all times carry out proper treatment both according to the subject's scientific development and health care ethics.
