Objectives and Content

Objective:

Upon completion of the course, students will have overall and interdisciplinary knowledge of diagnostics and treatment planning for common dental problems.

Content:

The course is an interdisciplinary, theoretical and clinical course joining subjects of Oral maxillofacial radiology, Oral surgery and oral medicine, Cariology, Endodontics, Prosthodontics, Periodontology and Community dentistry. The course is both theoretical and clinical.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

The student:

  • explains the strengths and weaknesses of various diagnostic procedures applied to investigate common dental problems.
  • knows clinical and radiographic features seen in common dental problems.
  • has general knowledge of management options for common dental problems.
  • knows indications and management alternatives when previous unsuccessful treatment is identified.
  • has the knowledge of commonly used medications related to dental treatment regarding their risk, contraindications and side effects.

Skills:

The student:

  • communicates effectively with patients and provide appropriate information so that the patient is motivated to have good oral hygiene habits and a healthy lifestyle with a focus on oral health prevention.
  • carries out a multidisciplinary assessment of possible diagnoses and corresponding treatment plans based on anamnesis, relevant diagnostic examinations and the patient's needs.
  • conducts preventive and necessary acute dental treatment due to infectious conditions and functional/aesthetic needs.
  • performs a risk and prognosis assessment of the patient's current status and treatments.

General competence:

The student shows her/his:

  • responsibility for respecting laws, regulations and clinical routines.
  • ability in diagnostics and treatment planning for common oral diseases.
  • ability to communicate with patients and colleagues professionally.
  • awareness of limitations in dental care and can search for medical help through referrals.

Required Previous Knowledge

Before starting the clinical part of OD4DIAGNOS, relevant subject specific courses must be passed (OD3RĂ˜NT, OD3KAR, OD3PERIO, OD3ENDO OG OD3PROT).
