Objectives and Content

Objective:

The objective of the course is to provide multidisciplinary understanding of topics such as traumatology, developmental disorders in the dentition, evidence based use of biomaterials and implantology in a thematic way.

Content:

The instruction deals with the themes:

  • dental trauma in children and adolescents, developmental defects and disorders, evidence-based choice of biomaterials
  • understanding of the history and basic principles of implant treatment including preparation and planning of implant treatment
  • understanding of late effects of trauma, biomaterials and processing methods used in dentistry to restore function or prevent loss of function
  • formal aspects about the production, selection and use of dental materials

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing the course, the student has the following learning outcome:

Knowledge:

The student has knowledge of:

Traumatology (trauma against teeth and their supportive tissues):

  • Traumatological diagnostics
  • Acute and permanent treatment with treatment alternatives
  • Assessment of prognosis and follow-up
  • Late effects of trauma against teeth
  • Financial support scheme for trauma against teeth

Dental developmental disorders:

  • Developmental disorders in enamel and dentin with etiology
  • Morphological deviations and agenesis
  • Diagnostical assessments and treatment aspects in short and long term
  • Financial support scheme

Evidence bases choice of materials:

  • Construction, composition, modes of reaction and properties of relevant groups of biomaterials
  • Areas of use and procedures
  • Regulatory/legal conditions that is of relevance to the choice and use of biomaterials

Implantology:

  • Historical development of dental implants
  • Indications, contraindications and treatment options when using dental implants
  • Procedures for placing and prosthetic rehabilitation
  • Follow-up, complications and maintainance

Skills:

Traumatology:

The student:

  • Diagnoses and treats dental trauma in the short and long run
  • Assess short- and long-term prognosis after dental trauma
  • Makes a follow-up plan
  • Informs the patient, possibly guardians, about financial support scheme after dental trauma

Dental developmental disorders:

The student:

  • Diagnoses, treats and refers, if needed, the patient for treatment by specialist
  • Assesses prognosis and makes a follow-up plan
  • Informs the patient, possibly guardians, about financial support scheme

Evidence bases choice of materials:

The student:

  • Chooses materials according to purpose and evidence in every treatment situation
  • Informs the patient about biological effects and possible side effects with the chosen material
  • Informs the patient about various treatment options, choice of materials and costs

Implantology:

The student:

  • Assess dental implant as treatment option and refers, if needed, the patient to a specialist
  • Assess clinical and radiological results after implant has been placed
  • Follows up and maintains dental implant(s)

General competence

The student:

  • shows the ability to critical evaluate his/her own limitations within the themes of the course
  • shows a professional and ethical proper attitude in his/her contact and communication with the patients and possibly caregivers/guardians
  • interacts with other relevant healthcare personnel

Seminars

All teaching is mandatory, except for lectures. The student is responsible for reporting absences, and unexcused absences are not allowed.¿In addition to the attendance requirements, the academic requirements must be met, both in terms of the quality of the work and sufficient practice.

In this subject, mandatory activities are valid for two semesters.
