Course description

Objectives and Content

Objectives:

The main objective of the subject is to give the student insight to odontological practice in the country to which she/he has travelled to. This will further more make the student reflect upon both differences and similarities between the partner institution and the Department of clinical dentistry when it comes to how odontological science and prevalence of disease in the soft- and hard tissues are implemented in treating patients.

Content:

The subject consists of both necessary clinical training in general dentistry treating patients, but also of more specific patient treatment of children/ youths and of patients with issues within the discipline of oral surgery and oral medicine. The training is done within the partner institution's current regualtions and guidelines and should overall give the student experience with odontological treatment outside of Norway.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student should have the following learning outcomes defined as knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge:

The student has knowledge of:

  • How the Exchange is using scientific theory in odontological treatment of patients within the clinical disciplines of endodontics, cariology, periodontology, oral prosthodontics, pedodontics, oral surgery and oral medicine and gerodontology in synergy with techniques and knowledge in the field of oral and maxillofacial radiology.
  • The Exchange institution's provisions and use of oral pathological descriptions and what treatment the patient gets based on diagnosis.
  • The Exchange institution¿s use scientific community dentistry, in which empirical data especially, and epidemiology in general, is of interest.

Skills:

  • The student uses skills achieved at the Department of clinical dentistry in treating patients at the Exchange institution, but clarifies in beforehand with the scientific staff at the Exchange institution that this will be in accordance with the regulations and guidelines used at the Exchange institution.
  • The student is capable of acquire necessary information about the scientific foundation for the odontological practice both at the Exchange Institution specifically and in the exchange country in general, in an independent manner.

Generalt competence:

The student shows a mature approach to considering how knowledge and skills achieved at Master of dentistry at The University of Bergen can be used at the Exchange Institution without breaking any local regulations. The student can reflect upon similarities and differences becoming visible during the exchange period. The student shows an independent ability to consider in retrospect what was odontologically useful besides the clinical volume training, during the exchange period.

Teaching and learning methods

The student attends lectures and learning activities with the class/group of students she/he is exchanging with at the Exchange institution. This will vary from institution to institution. A plan and schedule for how the instruction will be, is agreed upon between the Exchange institution and the student before she/he is on her/his exchange period.

It is a prerequisite that the instruction contains a significant amount of clinical training with in the general odontological disciplines as well as pedodontics and oral surgery and oral medicine.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
All instruction and learning activities besides lectures are considered mandatory. It is also recommended that the student participates in as much theoretical instruction as possible, as this will provide a wider platform and context when the report is to be written.
Forms of Assessment

The following form of assessment is used for this subject:

ORS: Written report (assignment), according to instructions given in advance. The report is delivered through the digital assessment system Inspera. References must be stated.

Course Evaluation
As an anonymous evaluation is not applicable for this subject as for other subjects at the Department, the subject manager will do a self-assessment every semester the Department is sending a student on exchange. The self-assessment contains a differentiation between which Exchange institution the various students have been to.
