Course description

Objectives and Content

The object of the course is for the student to become familiar with a given topic in the religious studies.

A supervisor will be assigned by the director of program (fagkoordinator), and based on the fields of interest of the respective student and his/her previous education a theme will be selected for the course.

The supervisor then assigns a reading list; the student reports regularly on the reading process. The course materials are discussed with the supervisor who also decides on the topic for the term paper.

Learning Outcomes

The student shall by the end of the course have gained the following learning outcome defined in knowledge, skills, and general competence:

Knowledge:

The student

  • has appropriate knowledge of the selected theme

Skills:

The student

  • has the capability of analysing a complex theme and of drawing conclusions on one¿s own
  • has the capability of critically examining theories and methods
  • has the capability of writing a coherent analytical text, thereby demonstrating a capacity for using the norms and techniques of academic writing

General competence:

The student

  • has practice in handling large quantities of information and literature within a short time period, and in interpreting and presenting information

Credit Reduction due to Course Overlap

Due to course overlap, students can not take RELV210 as well as RELV310. If combined, the outcome of credits will be reduced with 15 ECTS credits.

Furthermore, course overlap will be considered individually when selecting a theme, as to avoid course overlap with other course units within in the Study of Religion at UiB.

Access to the Course
This course is only open for incoming exchange students at the University of Bergen.
Teaching and learning methods
Regular supervision meetings, normally at least three.
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

Approved reading list and compulsory participation in supervision meetings (at least three meetings).

Compulsory assignments and attendance are evaluated with "approved"/"not approved".

All compulsory requirements must be approved in the semester of instruction to take the exam.

Compulsory assignments and attendance are valid only for the term in which they are approved.

Forms of Assessment
Term paper (about 6000 words).
Grading Scale
A grading scale from A to F, where A is the top grade and F is fail.

Reading List

Reading list of around 1000-1500 pages.

The reading list is published by June 1st for the autumn semester and by December 1st for the spring semester.
