Survival Analysis

Undergraduate course

Course description

Objectives and Content

This course deals with the analysis of data sets in which each observation indicates the length of a time interval until a certain event occurs. The event can, for example, represent death from particular causes, relapse after an operation, failure of a component in technical device, or germination of a seed under favourable conditions in a laboratory. The underlying distributions are typically asymmetrical. Frequently, a large part of the observations may be censored, which means that the actual time until the event is not observed, but it is still known that the event had not occurred at a given point in time. The course covers methods which make it possible to compare different samples of survival data. It also includes regression analysis of survival data when values of certain x-variables are associated with the observations.

Learning Outcomes

The students should become familiar with the theory for the most frequently used methods in survival analysis, with applications in areas such as medicine, technology and insurance.
