Center for Diabetes Mechanisms (DIA-MEC)

Main content

Center illustration

We aim to establish a diabetes research center (DIA-MEC) at the frontier of the field for the study of novel mechanisms related to diabetes development. The unique feature of DIA-MEC is the combination of the scientific approach, remarkable patient material, and the outstanding competence (ERC level) of the participants who together will make the endeavor possible. Our unique approach is investigating simultaneous and additive effects of various factors and mechanisms. By access to clinical and detailed genetic data from three large diabetes registries and three population-based health surveys, we have the possibility to generate ‘multi-omics’ data for novel biological discoveries.

It is well recognized that diabetes and its complications breaks down into subtypes with different etiologies and mechanisms. We hypothesize, however, that different mechanisms are active in the same patient through life, and that these mechanisms can be targets for specific and complementary...

Research goals

Our primary goals is to establish a Center of Excellence, DIA-MEC, offering novel insights into distinct and overlapping diabetes mechanisms throughout the lifespan, paving the way for precision diabetes diagnostics and treatment based on new mechanistic classification schemes.

Partners and people

DIA-MEC combines a unique set of competitive advantages. To conduct ground-breaking and ambitious research, we have brought together an interdisciplinary team of internationally recognized scientists.

This is a proposed Centre of Excellence – Senter for fremragende forskning – from the University of Bergen.
