Application procedure for applicants from outside EU

Admission to master's programmes for applicants from outside the European Union/EEA and Switzerland.

The application portal opens for applications from 3 November 2019.

Applicants who are not citizens of a country within the European Union, the European Economic Area or Switzerland must follow these four steps to submit a complete application. 

Step 1. Check the admission requirements

Before you start your application for admission, please check that you have the required academic background. Only applicants who meet the admission requirements and provide the necessary documentation are qualified. 

Admission to UiB is highly competitive. Approximately 8 % of international applicants are granted admission. 

CHECKLIST - ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

  1. You must have obtained a bachelor's degree, normally of minimum 4 years' duration. Your degree must be issued by a recognized university or university college. You can find the specific requirements for your home country in the country list
  2. You must have obtained a minimum average grade equivalent to ECTS grade C / US grade B. Compare your average grade with US grades
  3. You must document sufficient funding to obtain a residence permit for studies in Norway. The required amount is NOK 121 220 per year.
  4. Your degree must include courses equalling at least one and a half years of full-time studies in a subject relevant to the programme you apply for.
  5. You must check if the programme you wish to apply for has additional admission requirements. Check the list of Master's programmes in English.
  6. You must document your English language proficiency.

Conditional offers of admission 

Only completed degrees will be considered for admission. Unfortunately, UiB does not grant conditional offers of admission to applicants from outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland. 

Step 2. Check the English language requirements

Applicants must document English language proficiency by submitting an internationally recognised English test. The test result must be uploaded to your application.

Step 3. Register your application

Go to the Online Application Form - Søknadsweb

  1. Choose International Applicant.
  2. Click "Register new international applicant" and follow the instructions given.
    • Make sure your personal information is correct: home address, e-mail, mobile phone number, preferred language, etc.
    • Use your private address, not your university address. It is important that you enter the city code/post code and city.
  3. Click on "Save" to finish the registration. You will be redirected to the login page.
    • An email confirming your registration has been sent to your registered e-mail address
    • This email also contains your password for logging in.
  4. Log on to Søknadsweb and start the application process.
  5. Complete "My Profile" - click "Next".
  6. Choose New application: "Master's Programmes in English for Non-European Union applicants".
  7. Select the programme(s) you wish to apply for. You can apply for a maximum of two programmes by order of priority.
  8. Click "Save".

Step 4. Upload documents and submit your application

Documents must be uploaded in PDF-format. Please make sure that the documents are legible. 

  • We require all documents to be scanned from original documentation.
  • If the original language of your documents is not English, Norwegian, Swedish or Danish, an official translation to one of these languages must accompany your original documents.

Required documentation: 

  1. CV including your educational background
  2. Secondary School certificate / High School Diploma
  3. University degree certificate(s)/diploma(s)
  4. Transcript of records (an official statement listing courses/subjects you have completed at your university) including a description of the grading scale used 
  5. Course descriptions and syllabi for all relevant courses
  6. Documentation of English language proficiency
  7. Copy of your passport, or other official ID-card with photo 
  8. Motivation letter, maximum 450 words. Describe your personal motivation for applying to the programme(s) you are applying for
  9. Check if the master's programme you wish to apply for has any additional requirements
  10. You must document sufficient funding to obtain a residence permit for studies. Valid forms of documentation of funds:
    • Self-financing: Bank statement/transcript (dated after 1 October 2019) in your name detailing the required amount (NOK 121 220 or the equivalent in any currency)
    • Financing provided by sponsor: Guarantee letter and official bank statement/transcript (dated after 1 October 2019) showing possession of the required amount (NOK 121 220 or the equivalent in any currency)
    • A letter confirming that you are eligible for a scholarship/student loan from your home country

Click "Next".

Application receipt

Check the receipt and click "Done". We will also send the receipt to your registered e-mail. 

When you return to Soknadsweb, use the top menu to navigate as the application portal looks different after you have saved the application the first time.

Application Cycle

You have finished your application, what's next?

You can make changes to your application until the deadline 1 December. The status of your application will be Under consideration on Soknadsweb until the consideration of your application has been completed.

1 Feb.Additional documentation deadline: Final deadline to upload additional documentation, if necessary. Documents uploaded after this deadline will not be taken into consideration. 
31. Mar.Decisions published: You will receive the result of your application. If you are offered admission you will find the Letter of Acceptance published on Søkandsweb. You will also be notified by e-mail.
16 Apr.Deadline to accept offer of admission
By 15 MayStudent housing: Apply for student housing as soon as possible and before you apply for a residence permit.
By 1 JuneDeposit money: In order to obtain a residence permit for studies, you have to deposit money to SAMMEN’s Deposit Account for International Students.
By 1 JuneResidence permit: Apply for a residence permit for studies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the question "Do you have higher education from another university or college" mean?

Please select Yes. It is simply a control-question and will not have any implications for your application.

How do I upload documents?

When you create your application, you follow the steps (1-5) on Søknadsweb and upload accordingly.

If you log in later, choose My documents from the top menu and from there upload your documents. 

Do I have to upload all the documents by 1 December?

You can upload documents to Søknadsweb until the documentation deadline 1 February. You must submit your application by 1 December. You may be contacted by the Admissions Office at UiB if you need to finalize your application by uploading further documentation. The final deadline to upload additional documentation is 1 February. Documents uploaded after this deadline will not be taken into consideration. 

At Søknadsweb there is no button to officially send my application, so do I just leave it and it will be dealt with?

Søknadweb does not have a button to officially submit your application. Your application is officially complete when:

  • You have filled in your complete home address.
  • You have selected the study programmes you wish to apply for.
  • You have uploaded all the required documentation.

You can change your application until the deadline 1 December.

Should I send any documents by post?

No, you do not need to send any documents by post. We will check the original documents of admitted students after arrival at UiB.

I cannot find 'My documents' in the top menu - what do I do?

This is mainly an issue for applicants using a smart phone or tablet to apply: If you can't find 'My documents' in the top menu, click on the three white stripes in the top left corner and you will find 'My documents' in the drop down menu.

The list of documents to upload contains titles like 'Learning agreement', 'Diploma' and 'Repertoire for audition' - does this apply to me?

The document titles listed are the same for all admissions to UiB, some of them will therefore not apply to you. You should only choose the titles that corresponds to the documents you wish to upload. If you cannot find a relevant title, choose 'Other'.

Do I have to send copies of my documents by mail?

No, we do not accept documents sent by post - you have to upload all the documents to Søknadsweb. 

Note that if you are granted admission, you have to bring your originals to Bergen for verification.

What should the letter from my parents documenting funds contain?

The letter from your parents as documentation of funds must contain the following:

  • Confirm the relationship with the student (mother, father or legal guardian).
  • Confirm that the person will support the student's stay in Norway financially during the whole study period.
  • Confirm the amount and study period.
  • Signature.

Remember to upload the documents as pdf-files.

How long should the motivation letter be?

Approximately 1 page (450 words).

I have applied for two study programmes, do I have to write two motivation letters?

You can upload two different letters or write them as one, both will be ok.

Do I have to upload recommendations letters?

No, we do not require you to upload recommendation letters as part of the application process. Please check the list of required documents in Step 4.

At Søknadsweb there is no button to officially send my application, so do I just leave it and it will be dealt with?

Søknadweb does not have a button to officially submit your application. Your application is officially complete when:

  • You have filled in your complete home address.
  • You have selected the study programmes you wish to apply for.
  • You have uploaded all the required documentation.

You can change your application until the deadline 1 December. The status of your application will be Under consideration on Søknadsweb until we have finished the processing and published the result.

    My application status says Under consideration. What does it mean?

    The status of your application will be Under consideration on Søknadsweb until we have finished the processing. Also, see the answer above for more information.

    How do I get the housing guarantee? Do I have to apply for student housing now?

    You should not apply for housing now. Applicants that are granted admission to UiB, will have information on how to apply with a housing guarantee. The application deadline for student housing is 15 May.
