When we talk about career, what are we talking about then? Over three days, UiB wants to explore various aspects of careers and career development through lectures, debates and courses. The aim is to create debate and reflection, but also to provide space for networks and ideas.

PhDs, post-docs, researchers and new assistant professors associated with UiB.

In addition, we welcome other employees with an interest in the topic. Especially from the academic line, but also others such as research advisers and PhD-coordinators.

26 SEPTEMBER 

12:00 PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP: CV BUILDING

- How to build a CV that takes you where you want to go?

A chronological CV of everything you have done and achieved is important to have. Based on your wishes for a future career, it may be wise to create a plan for the skills you wish to acquire and document. Is a CV only retrospective, or can it be used strategically and for planning purposes?

Walk the career maze to get hands-on practice in career awareness, identifying skills, analyzing job-ads, and making the perfect pitch.

18:00 | RECEPTION - MINGLING

Networking is important for all types of careers. But how to network and how to easily mingle at conferences? Make use of this opportunity to learn a few tricks and mingle with stakeholders, industry, and peers, in a relaxed atmosphere. 

Mette Bøe Lyngstad is a lecturer in drama and applied theater at HVL. She will help us start the small talk to mingle.

13:00 | FELLOWS´COMPULSORY WORK

How do we ensure that compulsory work actually equips fellows to face the labor market? Is it possible to tailor the compulsory work for each candidate so that it contributes to individual development and skill enhancement? And who should have the last word when compulsory work tasks are to be determined?

PhD-candidate Mari Lund Eide at the Department of Foreign Languages has, among other things, created her own podcast about communication as part of her compulsory work.
In this session she invites postdoctoral fellow Ragnhild Gya, Department of Biological Science and professor Lise Rakner and TBA  for a cross-faculty conversation about the role, content and ambitions of compulsory work.

14:30| INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS - VESTLANDETS INNOVASJONSSELSKAP AS VIS 

Are you curious about creating your own job? Do you have an idea of ​​what you want to create a business out of? Come and hear how you can test whether your idea can be transformed into a place where you can work, without taking too many risks. You will also learn more about funding opportunities within early-phase research and innovation projects within academia.

16:00| CAREERS IN RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE 

Digitization has been a major driving force for carrying out larger and more complex research processes. It requires specialist expertise at a very high level to maintain and develop research infrastructure, and new career paths are emerging. One example is the position of data stewardship.

• Center for Digital Life Norway (DLN) is a national center for biotechnological research and innovation and is funded by the Research Council of Norway.

• ELIXIR Norway is a national node for ELIXIR, the pan-European infrastructure for biological information, which supports life science research and its translation into medicine, environment, bioindustry and society.

Christine Stansberg, Product line manager for sensitive data and LabIT at UiB and former ELIXIR Norway coordinator: career in local and European research infrastructure, experiences and advantages of doing a management MBA for research infrastructure.

Korbinian Bösl, Data handling coordinator in ELIXIR Norway & Center for Digital Life Norway: Data stewardship a new career path in research and industry. What does it entail and how do I qualify?

Professor Laura Saetveit Miles has seen good candidates fall at the last hurdle in the academic interview.

Career expert Gisle Hellsten, Head of UiO Careers for students. He is known from his career column in Aftenposten, where he shares his best advice for interviews in working life.

How to juggle long and short deadlines so that both parts are prioritized?
Professor Laura Saetveit Miles is not only a professor in British literature, she has also guided many early-career researchers  with the seminars in her webpage "Demystifying the Secrets of Success in Academia". This session will be a guide in time management and career development.
